Susan Mary Malone

Mentor Biography

A developmental editor, Susan Mary Malone attends to all aspects of a manuscript via a multi-pronged process under one large umbrella.  This includes: a substantive edit (genre-specific where called for, and including a host of examples and suggestions and discussion, all over the pages, illustrating every point made), an in-depth and comprehensive critique (15-30 pages, correlated specifically to the manuscript and delving into characterization, plotting and pacing, organization and structure, flow, voice and tone, all literary devices and stylistic elements, and overall substance), unlimited follow-up/coaching through revisions and beyond, a copyedit/review of the revised manuscript, and help with finding the right agent, for an all-inclusive fee.

An editor of the old school, she is very hands on, and remains with writers for the duration.

Praise

“I loved working with Susan Malone. Following upon numerous rejections, a university press expressed interest in my first novel. The fiction editor asked that I rewrite and resubmit. I did. But again came word that the work was not quite ready. I rewrote again. Still not ready. Suggestions seemed vague and not terribly helpful. And that is where Susan entered the picture. After reviewing my work, she enclosed an eighteen-page critique accompanying the marked-up manuscript. Working with her was like taking a graduate writing course. As would any superb teacher, Susan pointed out the flaws keeping my story from publication, made sure I understood, suggested approaches, provided unlimited follow-up as I revised my story, but put the burden of doing the work on me. And her optimistic, bountiful encouragement made it all a fun experience!" --James Dawsey, Masters and Savages (Mercer University Press, 2010)
