Lisa Abeyta

Successful freelance writer

Lisa Abeyta is an award-winning writer, columnist and writing teacher. Having sold hundreds of articles to national and local publications, she also provides copywriting, web-copy, and other writing services to private and corporate clients. She is active in several online writing communities, moderating forums and providing guest articles on freelance writing. Lisa also serves as a guest lecturer, speaker and teaches writing to both adults and students.

Lisa sold the first article she queried and has gone on to write for a variety of publications, including Writer’s Digest Magazine, Writer’s Market 2009, The Comic Journal, Su Casa Magazine, New Mexico Magazine, New Mexico Business Weekly, the Albuquerque Tribune, and the Albuquerque Journal. Her article have been reprinted in a variety of venues including the Harvard Business Review. Freelance assignments have included travel writing, business profiles, food writing (including developing original recipes and reviewing restaurants), human interest, and many others. Her essay chronicling the diagnosis of her baby with a life-threatening disease was an award-winning entry in the Women Writers of the Southwest annual competition.

Lisa wrote a popular humor column, The Diet Diaries, for the Albuquerque Tribune for both the print edition and website until the paper was closed by Scripps Howard in 2008. The column gained national attention and a national following after being featured on the Dr. Laura Schlessinger nationally syndicated talk show.

Lisa created the Diet Diaries blog as a companion project for her newspaper column where readers and fans could interact with her. It was featured several times by MSN as one of their best blogs and continues to draw loyal and new readers. In all, almost 40,000 have visited the blog in less than two years. She is currently working with a literary agent on a memoir based on the columns.

Lisa enjoys sharing the ins and outs of writing with others. She has provided expert columns on writing to such groups as Southwest Writers, Writers Market Online Community, and Writer’s Digest Magazine and Online Forum. She has served as a guest speaker and lecturer to high school students, mid-schoolers, and currently serves as a mentor to an elementary class and wrote, edited and published the award-wining newsletter for them as well. She is beginning a series of writing classes in conjunction with the City of Albuquerque Library Community Program. She also maintains writing-based blogs on her website and for Writer’s Market Online Community.

She has a strong background in education, helping launch an innovative Transitions Program to assist special needs high school students into the workplace and as an early childhood educator.
