David Farland

New York Times betselling author

Bestselling fantasy author David Farland also is the award-winning New York Times bestselling author of science fiction, under his real name, Dave Wolverton. He has been a writing instructor for dozens of high-profile writers.  As a creative writing teacher at Brigham Young University, his students included future New York Times bestsellers such as Stephenie Meyer (Twilight), and Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn and The Wheel of Time).  As the coordinating judge for the Writers of the Future Contest, he helped mentor other New York Times bestsellers and award-winning writers, such as Eric Flint (1632), and Elizabeth Wein (The Winter Prince).  In his private workshops, he has taught even more New York Times Bestsellers, such as Brandon Mull (Fablehaven) and such hot new writers as Jessica Day George (Princess of the Midnight Ball), and Dan Wells (I Am Not a Serial Killer).
Dave originally began writing for the literary mainstream as a prize-writer in the 1980s but soon developed a strong interest in writing formed fiction, and became a fantasist.  His career blossomed and he was offered a three-novel contract with Bantam books.  His first novel, On My Way to Paradise, won the Philip K. Dick Memorial Award as one of the best novels of 1989.  Since then, he has published nearly fifty novels for adults, young adults, middle-grade readers, and children.
Drawing his material from a wide range of sources—which include classical writers to the latest innovators—Dave tends to focus his lessons on “Storytelling as a Fine Art.”  He teaches advanced courses in audience analysis, story structure, characterization, and how to “keep your reader engrossed.”
